How to add "Page x of y" headers and footers to a PDF (and skip the cover)

How to add headers, footers and page-number placeholders to a PDF entirely in the browser: no garbled text, a cover page you can skip, and a preview before you download.

Before a thesis, a tender document or a contract goes out, the header usually has to carry the organisation name and the footer the page number. Tools like Smallpdf can do it, but they upload the file; for internal drafts I would rather do it locally.

Doing it in one step with TwoThink

Open PDF Header, Footer and Page Numbers:

  1. Drop in the PDF
  2. Fill in the left, centre and right slots of the header and footer as needed
  3. For page numbers use a placeholder such as Page {page} of {total}, or click one of the quick formats
  4. Set "start from page" to 2 to skip the cover; "starting number" can begin at 0 or 1
  5. Look at the preview of the first and last page, then download

The file is always processed locally in the browser and never uploaded.

Will the text come out as boxes?

Traditional pdf-lib fonts do not contain Chinese glyphs. Our implementation draws the text with your browser fonts and embeds it as a clean bitmap, so it displays correctly in any language (and header and footer text rarely needs to be selectable anyway).

How it fits with watermarks and signatures

  • A translucent notice across the whole page: Watermark PDF
  • A handwritten or image signature: Sign PDF
  • Margin information and page numbers: this tool

All of it happens on one site, which keeps the chain short.
